Working abroad

Permits, insurance, registration and certificates to sort out before a season abroad. Tick things off as you go; your ticks stay on this device.

Before any season abroad

The basics to check before you accept a job in another country.

Right to work

  • EU, EEA and Swiss citizens can usually work anywhere in the EU and EEA without a permit. Everyone else normally needs a visa or work permit before starting, and your employer may need to apply for it.

    Official information
  • Dates, day rate or salary, hours, accommodation and who pays for travel should all be written down before you go.

Insurance

  • If you are covered by a public health system in the EU, carry your European Health Insurance Card. It covers necessary state healthcare on temporary stays, not private care or repatriation.

    Official information
  • Ask whether your employer's policy covers you as an instructor or guide. Freelancers usually need their own professional liability cover.

  • Standard travel insurance often excludes working or rescue costs in the mountains or at sea. Check the small print for the activities you will do.

Tax and registration

  • This depends on where you live, where you work and for how long. If you work in more than one country, ask about an A1 certificate.

    Official information
  • Many countries ask you to register with the local authorities after about three months.

    Official information

Certificates

  • Some countries regulate who may teach or guide, for example ski instructors and mountain guides. Check before you go that your certificates are accepted there.

    Official information
  • Passport or ID, certificates, first aid card and driving licence. Upload them to your BeOutthere profile so employers can see them.
