Diplômes

Certifications that open doors

Which instructor and guide qualifications employers ask for, how the levels work, and how to keep yours valid.

Most outdoor employers ask for two things before anything else: a recognised teaching or guiding qualification, and a valid first aid certificate. Experience matters, but without the right paper many schools simply cannot insure you.

Snow sports

  • ISIA and national diplomas. Many countries run their own instructor system (BASI in the UK, CSIA in Canada, the Diplôme d'État in France, the Austrian Landesskilehrer). The ISIA stamp shows your national qualification meets an international minimum.
  • Levels matter. Entry levels let you teach beginners, often under supervision. Higher levels unlock off-piste groups, advanced lessons and better day rates.
  • Country rules differ. Some countries, France and Italy in particular, protect the title of ski instructor. Check whether your diploma is recognised before you accept an offer, and ask the employer how they handle equivalence.

Water sports

Surf schools usually ask for a national surf coaching award (ISA, Surfing England, Fédération Française de Surf) plus a beach lifeguard qualification. Sailing, kayaking and SUP centres look for the relevant federation instructor award and a powerboat licence for safety boats.

Mountain and trail guiding

Leading groups in the mountains usually needs a mountain leader or trekking guide award. Technical terrain (glaciers, climbing, ski touring) is reserved for fully qualified mountain guides with the IFMGA certification.

First aid

A current outdoor first aid certificate (often 16 hours) is expected almost everywhere. Book the refresher before it runs out, as many expire after three years.

Keep your profile up to date

Upload your certificates to your BeOutthere profile. Our team checks them, and checked profiles show a Certificates checked badge that companies look for when they shortlist.
